Act I, Scene 6
Act I, Scene 6
SETTING:
Somewhere on the circus grounds. Two separate locations.
AT RISE:
A light comes up on ANGELA. A separate light comes up on DAVID. HE is holding a note, which HE reads.
DAVID
"Meet me on the Midway. Six o:clock."
ANGELA
WHEN A CLOWN WALKS INTO THE CIRCUS RING
HIS FACE IS PAINTED, HIS NOSE IS RED.
HE MAKES PEOPLE LAUGH, THAT'S WHY HE'S A CLOWN,
LIKE BRASS RINGS ARE MADE FOR THE MERRY-GO-ROUND.
A CLOWN MAY BE FOOLISH BUT LOOK IN HIS EYES,
LONELINESS TEACHES A FOOL TO BE WISE.
WHEN PEOPLE STOP LAUGHING THE CLOWNS WILL ALL DIE.
WHO'D WANT TO LIVE THEN? WHO'D WANT TO TRY?
POOR PUNCHINELLO, MY FINE FUNNY FELLOW.
WHO'D WANT TO LIVE THEN? WHO'D WANT TO TRY?
(BLACKOUT)
